On Wednesday 9 March, the Archives and Records Association (Ireland) and the Digital Repository of Ireland hosted a one-day workshop providing an introduction to Encoded Archival Description (EAD). EAD is a standard used internationally for encoding archival finding aids. The standard is widely used for publishing archival finding aids online and for the sharing and re-use of archival metadata.
This workshop provided attendees with an introduction to the process of making archival finding aids available using EAD. It involved a practical component which involved creating EAD records using XML. Presentations by Rebecca Grant, Digital Archivist at DRI and Fergus Fahey, Training Officer ar ARA(I), described the principles of metadata sharing, EAD and XML and possible applications of EAD. DRI Software Engineer Kathryn Cassidy also introduced some of the tools available for creating, sharing and publishing EAD records and demonstration of how EAD can be shared through the Digital Repository of Ireland’s platform.
