The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) is pleased to announce that a new collection –  Exploring Loneliness and Social Isolation in Emerging adulthood (ELSIE) – has been published in the Repository through the The Irish Qualitative Data Archive (IQDA).

Exploring Loneliness and Social Isolation in Emerging adulthood (ELSIE) is a collaborative project between SpunOut, the University of Limerick – and funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC).

The goal of the ELSIE project is to understand more about loneliness during the phase of life between adolescence and fully-fledged adulthood, described as “emerging adulthood”. Although loneliness is often viewed as a problem of older adulthood, research indicates that young adults also have high rates of loneliness.

This study invited young adults to share their views and experiences of loneliness to better understand the experience of loneliness from the perspective of young adults and to identify what young adults believe causes and maintains feelings of loneliness. The results of this study aim to investigate the risk factors for loneliness in young adulthood, including what might lead a young adult to experience loneliness, and what might keep young adults feeling lonely.

The ingested collection includes a dataset of 24 interviews conducted with young adults between June and November 2021, on the topic of loneliness in young adulthood.

“Exploring Loneliness and Social Isolation in Emerging adulthood” can be viewed and downloaded in the DRI Repository.
