The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) is pleased to announce that a new collection – Artistic Doctorate Resources – has been published in the Repository through University College Cork (UCC) as part of the Visioning the Future: Artistic Doctorates in Ireland project, led by Professor Jools Gilson and postdoctoral researcher Inês Bento-Coelho.
The Visioning the Future project focused on exploring the landscape of doctoral education in Performing Arts and Film / Screen Media in Ireland. In the summer of 2020, the project ran a lively online seminar series on doctoral education in creative practice, and engaged with staff and students in one-to-one conversations. The project also contributed to the development of national policy and protocol to support the establishment of best practices in the sector, and developed free downloadable Open Educational Resources for supervisors, students and examiners.
The Artistic Doctorate Resources uploaded to the Repository range from toolkits to enhance employability for Artistic Research doctoral students, to practical advice on selecting examiners as well as strategies for examination success. Says Professor Gilson on this remarkable collection:
‘Visioning the Future was the first National research project to focus on the Artistic Doctorate (PhD which includes artistic practice as part of final submission) in an Irish context. We wanted a lively playful design to meet these Open Educational Resources which offer resonant support for students, supervisors and institutions from multiple arts practice disciplines. We’re delighted that this resource is now part of the DRI’.
Dr Patrick Egan, lectuer in Digital Arts & Humanities, University College Cork, added that the publication of these resources in the Repository ‘realises our goals of providing a great resource that has now been added for long-term preservation’.
Overall, this resource aims to support students, staff, and institutions to enhance their doctoral provision for Artistic Research PhDs.
