We're delighted to announce the publication of our latest series of guidelines, MARC21 encoded as MARCXML and the Digital Repository of Ireland.
This completes our series of metadata guidelines, which we began publishing in 2015. These guidelines, on the use of metadata standards, schema and workflows, are geared towards users and potential users of the Digital Repository of Ireland.
To date we have published guidelines on Simple and Qualified Dublin Core, MODS, and EAD, as well as guidelines on First Steps in Digital File Transfer Storage, Metadata Quality Control, Choosing Content Management System Technologies, Thesaurus Construction Guidelines for the MoTIF project, and guidelines on using the Linked Logainm Dataset. With the publication of MARCXML, we now have a complete set of metadata and usage guidelines, designed to assist members of DRI and those working in digital repositories more generally.
MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging) standards are a set of digital formats for the description of items catalogued by libraries, such as books. Developed originally by the Library of Congress, it is now an international standard. MARCXML is an XML schema based on the common MARC21 standards. It facilitates the sharing of, and networked access to, bibliographic information and is used worldwide.
