On the evening of the 20th September, the Royal Irish Academy opened its historic doors as part of Culture Night. Our team was there to share information about the Digital Repository of Ireland and our work as a national digital repository for Ireland’s humanities, social sciences, and cultural heritage data. We chatted to a wide range of attendees about how oral histories are collected for our project with Atlantic Philanthropies Archives and Cornell University Library, and how DRI is participating in the Europeana Common Culture project to share collections even more widely.
Culture Night invited all to ‘wrap up in culture’, to step off the autumnal streets and walk into venues and public spaces. Each participating venue offered a variety of free entertainment and was open to all. As part of this all-island celebration of arts, heritage and culture, the Royal Irish Academy shared a wealth of different research, including the Irish Historic Towns Atlas project; the Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge and Dictionary of Medieval Latin from Celtic Sources; the Dictionary of Irish Biography; and, of course, us!
