Connect with us: changes to DRI’s social media strategy

Submitted on 10th April 2025

The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) has been undertaking a review of its social media presence in 2025 to ensure that our digital communications align with our organisation’s values, as outlined in our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy

DRI uses multiple social media channels to communicate DRI news and events, open up collection material for discovery and reuse, and announce new DRI members, new collections, and new training resources and publications. Due to recent changes to policies implemented by X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, DRI is re-evaluating our social media presence to ensure that the channels we use align with our organisational values.

DRI ceased activity on X at the end of February 2025 as the platform was no longer consistent with our organisational values of transparency and reliable information sharing. We have been redirecting our communication efforts to professional platforms such as LinkedIn, where our audience is increasingly active, as well as diversifying our platforms by joining Bluesky and the digital preservation community (digipres.club) on Mastodon

DRI has a presence on the Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram. Meta’s recent policy changes, such as their updated hateful conduct guidelines, endanger vulnerable communities of people. DRI has, therefore, decided to close our Facebook account by the end of the month and redirect our social media efforts to more inclusive and welcoming platforms.

DRI launched its first Instagram account in late 2021 primarily to showcase material from collections in the DRI repository with the aim of opening up the digital collections we steward for the greatest discovery and reuse. While Instagram continues to serve as a valuable platform for sharing Ireland’s digital cultural heritage more openly, Meta’s recent policy changes raise serious concerns about inclusivity. DRI will be monitoring Meta’s policy developments and investigating the viability of alternative platforms to Instagram for increasing the visibility of digital cultural heritage. We will review our social media strategy again in 2026 with a view to phasing out our presence on Instagram.
