The most recently-published issue of EuropeanaTech Insight focuses on 3D. The editors of Issue 14 invited contributions from members of Europeana’s task force on 3D content, including DRI Software Engineer Dr Kathryn Cassidy.

The issue includes an article entitled, ‘3D Activities of the Europeana Common Culture Project’, co-authored by Dr Cassidy with DRI Software Developer Mashal Ahmad; Rónán Swan of Archaeology & Heritage, Transport Infrastructure Ireland; and Cosmina Berta, of DnB.

‘3D Data is a hot topic in the world of Cultural Heritage’, the authors write. They explain that ‘the Europeana Common Culture project 3D activity, led by Trinity College Dublin, has been working with the 3D Content in Europeana Task force on best practice recommendations for 3D content.’

Working with a dataset provided by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the authors proceed to cover the processes involved in preparing 3D data for aggregation into Europeana including pre-processing, normal computation, and surface reconstruction and end with a focus on ‘Aggregating 3D objects using EDM’.

Read the article online in full, in Issue 14 of EuropeanaTech Insight.
