We are pleased to announce that we are hosting a half day workshop on Linked Data and metadata cleaning, delivered by Free Your Metadata, an initiative of the Université libre de Bruxelles and Universiteit Gent. Registration will open shortly, and space restrictions limit the number of participants.

Registration is now open
. Because the number of participants is strictly limited, preference will be given to individuals working with metadata for cultural institutions. If you would like to register, please email drievents@ria.ie, and include a brief statement (max 200 words) about your interest in attending the session.

Who should attend?

Cataloguers, curators, archivists, digital repository managers. Participants should have experience with metadata at large, but no explicit technical understanding of Linked Data or any other standard/technology is required. Those working with social and cultural data will find this of particular interest.

Why should I attend?

Participants will gain a better understanding of the possibilities but also the limits of Linked Data, through a conceptual introduction and hands-on experience with the cleaning, linking and publishing of their own metadata.

What do I need to bring?

Participants need a laptop with OpenRefine (including NER + DERI RDF extensions) pre-installed. More information about the installation of OpenRefine and the two extensions can be found on freeyourmetadata.org.

The workshop will contain a significant hands-on portion, and participants are asked to bring an export (or a sample) of their own metadata, in the form of a flat file list which can be stored in XML, CSH, TSV or simply as a spreadsheet in Excel. In the course of the workshop, the metadata will not be uploaded or published on the Web, so there should be no concern about bringing "dirty" or incomplete metadata sets. As for how *much* metadata you bring, the answer is the more the better: take a complete export if you can.

Who are the workshop facilitators?

Within the current move towards a more structured and semantic environment for electronic resources, it is Seth van Hooland's goal to bridge the gap between domains (Document and Records Management, Open and Linked Data, Digital Humanities), practices (manual and automated metadata creation, data cleaning and enrichment) and communities (academia, industry, activists and practitioners) in order to make resources as accessible as possible in a sustainable manner. Van Hooland holds the Digital Information Chair at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium.

Ruben Verborgh is a PhD researcher in semantic hypermedia, and is fascinated by the Web's immense possibilities. He tries to contribute ideas that will maybe someday slightly influence the way the Web changes all of us. His degree in Computer Science Engineering convinced him more than ever that communication is the most crucial thing for IT-based solutions. This is why he really enjoys explaining things to those eager to learn. Ruben currently works at Multimedia Lab, a research group of iMinds, Ghent University, Belgium, in the domains of the Semantic Web, web APIs, and adaptive hypermedia.

Ruben has just co-authored a book on OpenRefine. Currently, Seth and Ruben are working on a handbook on Linked Data for the cultural heritage sector, which will be published next year by Facet.
