MU Social Science Institute and the Digital Repository of Ireland welcome Dr. Jess Gantt-Shafer for this hybrid event.
Dr. Jess Gantt-Shafer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her research interests include media and technology, organizing and social change, health communication and stigma, dialogue and difference, and neoliberalism.
Since the fall of Roe v. Wade in July 2023, Jess has confidentially interviewed 80 organizers and volunteers at reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations across the United States. Often working across state lines and internationally, these low and no funding groups operate remote talk and text lines that directly provide callers and texters emotional, logistical, financial, and informational support.
Jess will discuss the 2022 – 2024 post-Roe cultural context in the US, and the context emerging in 2025 as the new federal administration begins. She will talk about the challenges and joys of collecting ephemeral stories of discreet organizing during unfolding crises.
