Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) are delighted to welcome some of Ireland’s leading archaeologists and scholars to Synergies: Transport Projects and Collaborative Research in Archaeology.

There has been an unprecedented programme of archaeological work undertaken on TII transport projects over the past twenty years, which, in turn, has generated a phenomenal archaeological dataset. Since the outset of this work in the early 2000s, there has been a concerted effort to ensure that the results have been available to scholars so that they could be used as widely as possible in different research initiatives. One of the key characteristics of this work is that the archaeological research commences at the very outset of any these projects. In essence, the process of knowledge creation begins in the field and is refined and augmented through analyses, technical reporting, popular and professional dissemination, and, ultimately, academic synthesis and further understanding. Moreover, the lessons learned from this synthetic approach has also helped improve field practice and, thus, enhance the quality of the raw data available for analysis and further study.

TII has established several research projects over the years, such as the Ballyhanna Research Project and the Ranelagh Archaeology Project, in collaboration with local authorities, academia, and the private sector. It has also been a project partner on national and international projects, such as the Irish Strategic Archaeological Research (INSTAR) programme, which was established in 2008. TII has also enabled independent research through the TII Digital Heritage Collections, whereby the results of TII’s national road and light rail projects are freely accessible to all.

At this seminar, TII will showcase the various synergies that have formed between the academic, regulatory and private sectors to address highly relevant research topics and create new knowledge and understanding for the academic world and for the general public alike.
