The School of History of Art and Cultural Policy at University College Dublin is launching the Archiving the 8th website with an online information event on Wednesday 17th November from 7.00 – 7.45 PM.

Funded by the Wellcome Trust, Archiving the 8th is a research and networking project that emerged in the immediate months following the referendum on the 8th Amendment of the Irish Constitution on 25 May 2018, which overturned the constitutional ban on abortion in Ireland. As a collective of archivists, academics, and activists, the ambition of the project is to support nationwide efforts to archive, collect, and research issues concerning women’s reproductive health and rights, spanning the two abortion referenda in Ireland (1983-2018). The collective includes representatives from the National Library of Ireland, the National Museum of Ireland, Together for Yes, the Digital Repository of Ireland, the Irish Museums Association, the National College of Art and Design amongst others – showcasing the broad range of expertise and interest harnessed by this project.

Archiving the 8th has brought together innovative methodologies, a wide variety of commentaries and new ideas and is placed at the intersection of archives, activism and academia. The website aims to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and capacity to donate their materials related to the 8th to institutions – or to create their own archival repositories. This will ensure that the history surrounding the 8th Amendment in Ireland will be preserved and recorded.

Join Dr Emily Mark-FitzGerald (UCD), Dr Lorraine Grimes (DRI) and Dr Maeve O’Brien (UCD) as the project coordinators showcase the Archiving the 8th website and share new information about the Digital Repository of Ireland’s ‘sister project’, the Archiving Reproductive Health initiative.
