The Growing Up in Ireland collection has been published in DRI by the Irish Qualitative Data Archive
Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) is the national longitudinal study of children and youth in Ireland. The study, which began in 2006, follows two cohorts of children aged 9 years (child cohort) and 9 months (infant cohort). Members of the child cohort are currently around 17 years old, while members of the infant cohort are aged about 7 to 8 years. The main aim of the study is to inform Government policy in relation to children, young people and families. Growing Up in Ireland is carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD). It is funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) and overseen by DCYA in association with the Central Statistics Office.
Aileen O’Carroll, Policy Manager for DRI and manager of the Irish Qualitative Data Archive, said “We are delighted that this important research data will now be more easily available to researchers both today, and in the long term”.
The first waves of data collection for Growing Up in Ireland included a qualitative study of around 120 families drawn from the main survey sample in each cohort. The qualitative study explored in more depth children’s and parents’ perspectives on issues examined in the survey. Qualitative data from the child cohort include interview transcripts, drawings and written materials from each child interview, transcripts from each parent interview, and interviewer field notes. The research data has been deposited in DRI thanks to the help of intern Nur Nadiah Binte Zailani, an MSc student in Applied Social Research at Trinity College Dublin. Researchers can request access to the data via the DRI interface. All metadata is openly accessible.
