Dr Daniel Bangert, National Open Research Coordinator, is moving to an exciting new role as Director of 4TU.ResearchData in the Netherlands. Dr Bangert has coordinated the National Open Research Forum (NORF) since he joined the Digital Repository of Ireland, coordinating body for NORF, in 2020.

Under Dr Bangert’s leadership, NORF developed and launched Ireland’s National Action Plan for Open Research 2022-2030 in November 2022. Also in 2022, he oversaw the funding of six national projects to implement priority actions in the plan, funded through NORF’s Open Research Fund. By building national capacity and infrastructure for open research, these projects are helping progress Ireland’s strategic goals for research and innovation. This year, Dr Bangert established an annual National Open Research Festival (NORFest) as a forum for the research community to present and discuss work related to Ireland’s transition towards open research. The inaugural Festival will take place 2-3 November 2023. At this event, another round of projects funded by NORF’s Open Research Fund will be launched to deliver further priority actions and help foster the uptake of open research in Ireland.

During his time at NORF, Dr Bangert represented Ireland on the Council for National Open Science Coordination (CoNOSC) and was a member of the CoNOSC Board. He was Ireland’s National Point of Reference on the Commission Expert Group on National Points of Reference on Scientific Information and was coordinator and member of NORF’s Steering Group and Grants Oversight Committee. He has also been Co-Chair of the Research Data Alliance National PID Strategies Working Group since 2021.

Dr Lisa Griffith, Interim Director of the Digital Repository of Ireland, thanked Dr Bangert for his work:

During his time as Coordinator of the NORF, Dr Bangert has helped Ireland make significant progress in open research. He coordinated and launched the road map to help Ireland achieve its commitment to open research – the National Action Plan for Open Research 2022-2030. He has helped the open research Community in Ireland to identify priority areas and to conceive of projects that will help us identify, plan, and to realise those goals. He brought his considerable expertise to other national bodies and he has represented Ireland internationally through organisations such as CoNOSC. We’d like to thank him for this work and wish him well in this next exciting stage of his career.

Dr Lisa Griffith, DRI Interim Director

NORF’s Open Research Fund, provided by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science through the Higher Education Authority, supports the implementation of the National Action Plan for Open Research. This fund is managed by the Digital Repository of Ireland and is distributed through an onward allocation process overseen by NORF.

Dr Bangert will leave his position at NORF to take up his new role in November 2023.

DRI is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) via the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and the Irish Research Council (IRC).
