Before the fast evolution of the current COVID-19 situation, RDA Ireland has reached out to the Health Service Executive National Health Library and Knowledge Service (NHLKS) to gather insights on the organisation’s approach to research data management and implementation of Open Science principles. The importance and value of this work has become unmistakably obvious and tangible, as Aoife Lawton, General manager and National HSE Librarian, has stated:
“We are currently working behind the scenes of the health services from our makeshift home offices to support the frontline workers in the fight against the global challenge of COVID-19. In partnership with HSE Clinical Design and Innovation, we recently launched an open access “Covid-19 HSE Clinical Guidance and Evidence” Repository. Available at http://hselibrary.ie/covid intended for frontline health professionals.
We work to open doors to science, to knowledge, to clinical guidance and to evidence. Publishers and educators are working with us to provide open access to knowledge. We have seen tremendous gestures in this area including publishers who in the normal course of events are very much ‘subscription only’.
A crisis has brought common sense to the opportunity and truth that open science presents. Wouldn’t it be something if it lasted beyond Covid-19?”
