Gender identity in the workplace: An introductory guide

Context

Transgender Equality Network Ireland [TENI] is a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve conditions and advance the rights and equality of trans people and their families. The organisation’s vision is an Ireland where trans people are understood, accepted and respected, and can participate fully in all aspects of Irish society. TENI has dedicated its resources to the ending of transphobia, including stigma, discrimination and inequality and continues to work for social, political and legal recognition of trans people in Ireland since 2006.

In 2009 the Transgender Equality Network [TENI] of Ireland were awarded €450,000 to support the development of an active and sustainable organisation to advocate for the needs and greater legal protections of transgendered people in Ireland. The grant is titled Building Sustainable LGBT Communities and is intended to be core support for TENI. Gradually released over a three year period, the funding was to support the development of an active and sustainable organisation to advocate for the needs and greater legal protections of transgendered people.

The twenty-eight page long document offers a glossary of transgender terminology, a guideline on how to support transgender friendly workplaces before discussing transgender people and workplace law as well as the role of the union in relation to the subject. Irish Congress of Trade Unions and Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI] jointly produced this publication, which was funded by funded by the European Social Fund 2007-2013 and by the Equality Authority of Ireland with the intention to promote equality and to help foster understanding of gender identity and transgender experiences in the workplace.
