Oral history interview of Christina Burke

Context

Christina Burke is an activist for disability rights and a member of the National Platform of Self Advocates, an independent organisation run by people with intellectual disabilities for people with intellectual disabilities. Christina was nominated by the National Platform of Self Advocates as the oral history interviewee representative for a stakeholder-beneficiary of the Centre for Disability Law and Practice, NUIG.

This eighteen-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2018., In this interview Christina Burke talks about of the importance of the National Platform of Self Advocates, emphasising on building an inclusive research network. She elaborates on her personal experience of living in Ireland with a disability and details the difficulties for someone with a speech disability in dealing with service providers. Christina also gives insights into the importance of people with intellectual disabilities to organise themselves for activities such as research, advocacy, and lobbying so to be able to raise issues central to the disability community first-hand., and This recording contains the personal views of the participants, they do not reflect the views of the DRI.
