Tonie Walsh is an Irish LGBTQ rights activist, journalist and founder of the Irish Queer Archive. He was president of the National LGBT Federation [NXF] from 1984 to 1988.

Description:
This thirty-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2018., Tonie Walsh explains how he founded Gay Community News [GCN], Ireland’s longest-running lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender publication in 1988. He also discusses his work for the National LGBT Federation [NXF], formerly known as the National Gay and Lesbian Federation [NGLF] and National Gay Federation [NGF]. Tonie elaborates on the difficulties faced by the gay community in the 1980s, gives a window into gay pop culture of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and discusses how the economic downturn and consequent austerity has affected gay activism since late 2000s., and This recording contains the personal views of the participants, they do not reflect the views of the DRI.
