Context

Transgender Equality Network Ireland [TENI] is a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve conditions and advance the rights and equality of trans people and their families. The organisation’s vision is an Ireland where trans people are understood, accepted and respected, and can participate fully in all aspects of Irish society. TENI has dedicated its resources to the ending of transphobia, including stigma, discrimination and inequality and continues to work for social, political and legal recognition of trans people in Ireland since 2006.

In 2009 the Transgender Equality Network [TENI] of Ireland were awarded €450,000 to support the development of an active and sustainable organisation to advocate for the needs and greater legal protections of transgendered people in Ireland. The grant is titled Building Sustainable LGBT Communities and is intended to be core support for TENI. Gradually released over a three year period, the funding was to support the development of an active and sustainable organisation to advocate for the needs and greater legal protections of transgendered people.

Description:

The research report was published by Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) in 2009, predating the grant making activities by the Atlantic Philanthropies. It was supported by the ILGA-Europe Human Rights Violations Documentation Fund. The research presented in the forty-four-page long report includes an executive summary, definitions of transgender, transphobia and hate crime, a definition of hate crimes in the Irish context, a policy, documentation and literature review, a chapter on institutionalised transphobia followed by a chapter on hate crime reporting and monitoring and a chapter on trans discrimination. It finalises with a conclusion and models of best practice before offering recommendations.
