Context

Gerard Quinn is a professor of law at the University of Leeds and at the Wallenberg Institute in the University of Lund, Sweden. He was formerly professor of law at the National University of Ireland, Galway [NUIG] and Director of the university's Center for Disability Law and Policy at the School of Law. He was appointed to the Council of State by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins in 2012.

Description:

This thirty-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2018., Gerard gives background to his work drafting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which was adopted in 2006. Gerard explains how funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies has helped founding the Centre for Disability Law and Policy [CDLP] at NUIG by supporting initial research and people in 2001 followed by constructing the building that houses the centre. Gerard outlines CDLP’s activities and achievements in gaining civil and political rights for disabled people and influencing public policy. He explains how CDLP is engaged in many international networks and national research bodies in the area of disability and how CDLP became the first in Europe to offer a masters and research programmes in disability law and policy., and This recording contains the personal views of the participants, they do not reflect the views of the DRI.
