Oral history interview of Salome Mbugua

Context

Salome Mbugua is head of operations and strategy with Akina Dada wa Africa [AkiDwA]. She is also a researcher, gender equality activist and human rights advocate with experience of working with under-represented groups, with women, children, and young people, in Europe, Africa and internationally. In June 2018 Salome was appointed chair of the working group on Ireland’s Third National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security and in September 2018 the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins appointed her to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

This thirty-eight-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2019., Salome’s interview outlines the early work of Akina Dada wa Africa [AkiDwA] in relation to Ireland’s growing migrant community in 1990s. During this period AkiDwA provided migrant woman with advice and support, especially in regard to the Twenty-Seventh Amendment of the Constitution Act, 2004, which amended the constitution of Ireland to limit the constitutional right to Irish citizenship of individuals born on the island of Ireland to the children of Irish citizens. Salome also explains how AkiDwA worked with The Atlantic Philanthropies funded Coalition Against the Deportation of Irish Children [CADIC], provided education and information for women living in direct provision, and how she campaigned against female genital mutation, which was made a criminal act in Ireland in 2012., and This recording contains the personal views of the participants, they do not reflect the views of the DRI.
