Context

Peter O’Mahony was chief executive of Irish Refugee Council [IRC] from 1999-2004 at a key time in IRC’s development. Prior to this Peter worked abroad in education and development for agencies such as Concern.

Description:
This thirty-six-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2019 and In this interview Peter O’Mahony talks about his work at IRC and gives background to the development of IRC, with emphasis to the hiring of expertise, that was made possible with funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies to shape organisation. Peter also gives background to refugees in Ireland, explaining who was seeking refuge and why and explains that with greater numbers of people seeking refuge in Ireland since the 1990s responsible action was needed.
