Oral history interview of Liam Herrick

Context

Liam Herrick was appointed to Executive Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties [ICCL] in November 2016. Prior to his appointment, he worked as Advisor to President Michael D. Higgins for almost three years. Liam was Executive Director of the Irish Penal Reform Trust [IPRT] between 2007 and 2014. He has also worked as the first head of legislation and policy at the former Irish Human Rights Commission and with the Law Reform Commission and the Department of Foreign Affairs. He is a member of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission [IHREC], a former Board member of the Children’s Rights Alliance and the Minister for Justice and Equality’s Strategic Review Group on Penal Policy [2012-2014].

This twenty-nine-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2018., In this interview Liam Herrick gives a background to the work of the Irish Penal Reform Trust [IPRT], an independent charity founded in 1994 by a group of citizens concerned about the abuses of human rights in Irish prisons, and the importance of their work. He outlines the legislative and policy reform achievements made by the IPRT in the period he worked there [2007-2014) and outlines the difficulties that remain in society in this area., and This recording contains the personal views of the participants, they do not reflect the views of the DRI.
