It's no joke: Civil marriage rights for lesbians and gay men in Ireland
- Context
-
The National LGBT Federation [NXF] is a non-governmental organisation in Dublin, Ireland, which focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. The NXF publishes Gay Community News [GCN] and campaigns for the equal rights of, and to combat discrimination against, LGBT people in Ireland and internationally. The organisation was founded as the National Gay Federation [NGF] in 1979. In 1990, the NGF board voted to amend its name to the National Lesbian and Gay Federation [NLGF]. In 2000, the NLGF was incorporated as a not-for-profit limited company by guarantee and achieved charitable status. In February 2014, the NLGF was renamed the National LGBT Federation or NXF for short. The announcement was made at an event in Dublin celebrating 35 years of the organisation's existence.
In 2008, €400,000 were awarded to the National LGBT Federation [NXF], who were then called National Lesbian and Gay Federation [NLGF]. The purpose of the funding was to improve equality of rights for the LGBT community by providing support to MarriagEquality's campaign for same sex marriage. NXF acted for MarriagEquality at the time. MarriagEquality was a not for profit, single issue, national grassroots advocacy organisation, whose goal was to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Ireland through the extension of civil marriage rights to same-sex couples between 2008 and 2018.
