Open Science aims to transform science by making research more open, global, collaborative, creative and closer to society.
DRI, under the aegis of the ALLEA e-Humanities Working Group and the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), is co-organising a two-day Open Science event with The Health Research Board (HRB).
The immediate impetus for this event is the invited visit of Professor Barend Mons, Chair of the High Level Expert Group (HLEG) of the European Open Science Cloud Initiative (EOSC). The HLEG provides strategic advice to the EU Commission on research data sharing, data stewardship and data reuse in the context of the implementation of the EOSC, as part of the EU Commission Digital Single Market Strategy.
The first day (Day1 Monday 27 June 2016) will be policy focused and will bring together leading players in Ireland to discuss our Open Science policies and practices and to consider how to develop the Open Science agenda in Ireland.
The second day (Day 2 Tuesday 28 June 2016) will focus on research data governance and good practice, and is targeted at researchers and institutions’ research support personnel.
Please note that with different target audiences, there is a separate registration process (and link/url) for each day.
It is planned to publish a report after the event laying out an Irish agenda for Open Science, current thinking in Ireland on how to progress, and including exemplars of current best practice in Ireland. We also hope to be better informed on how the HRB and other players could facilitate and support best practice in Ireland on use and reuse of research data, meet EU recommendations and approach the development of new expertise.

- Keynote address outlining how the EU is developing Open Science as a priority agenda and reaching out to Member States, and providing an insight into the EU Open Science Policy Platform.
- Case studies and presentations showing Ireland’s current relationship with Open Science.
- Discussion from the perspective of different sectors on what Ireland should do to progress
- Publication of a report after the event laying out an Irish agenda for Open Science and including exemplars of current best practice in Ireland.

Day 2 Open Science – Exploring Data

This event will promote and discuss support for a culture of good research practice on managing, using, sharing and publishing research data. Researchers, research institutions, research-support providers and funders all have key roles to play in supporting an enabling environment and in developing the resources, expertise and infrastructure required in order to sustain the long term value of the research data.
Key activities:
- Keynote outlining the importance of research data management and stewardship, data publication, FAIR principles, current international needs and EU targets, and the data expertise necessary to support research data good practice.
- Case studies and presentations of current research data practice in Ireland.
- Panel and audience discussion on the issues, barriers and enablers in Ireland towards addressing EU recommendations.
